In this issue:
The next Parent Council meeting is being held next Monday evening at 7pm in the Library. As well as an update on important dates and activities at the school, we will also be approving our fundraising spending for the year.
We hope to see you there!
Our second pizza lunch is being held Wednesday, February 3rd. It’s a great break from brown-bagging it on a cold winter day!! It’s only $5 for two slices of pizza, dessert and a drink. Order forms will be sent home this week and should be sent back to the school by Monday, January 25th.

This is a brief synopsis of the last Ward Forum held at Sunny View.
It was a full house with many parents, principals and staff attending to hear our new TDSB Director of Education, Dr. Chris Spence outline his “Vision of Hope” for the future of teaching and learning in our schools. His top 3 priorities are student achievement, parent engagement and financial stability.
His main focus is to prepare our students for the 21st century in our ever changing world of global technology. From chalkboards to interactive smart boards, notebooks to laptops, textbooks to search engines…the list is comprehensive and reflects a different classroom experience than many of us experienced in school. Dr. Spence believes our classrooms need to change into hubs of activity to keep our kids “powered up” instead of “powered down” at classroom desks.

Grade 7 and 8 music students are invited to participate in the All City Strings, Band, or Orchestra. These ensembles are made up of students from across the TDSB and work towards a huge performance in Massey Hall. This concert features all of the All City Ensembles and other musical performances. This would be a great enrichment to the music education you are receiving at St. Andrew’s. The students who have participated in the past have really enjoyed the experience.
As you know, during the week of January 25 – 29th, our grade 9 students will write their first set of exams. We believe that exam writing is a skill that will benefit our students as they progress through high school and beyond. To support them through this very important learning experience, teachers are spending time in class reviewing test-taking strategies, stress management and study skills. As well, in all of their classes for which there are exams, students are receiving topic overviews and review sheets (these will be distributed during the first week back after the holiday break). These packages include a variety of questions which will assist students in achieving success on their January exams.
If you and your family would like to join in the celebration, please make your way over to York Mills Collegiate tomorrow afternoon. This is not a St. Andrew’s led event so if your child decides to attend, you are responsible for his/her supervision and travel plans. Go out and support our Olympic athletes as they vie for Gold in Vancouver.
If you would like to help save our Toronto TDSB pools, there is a competition being sponsored by the Aviva Community Fund to donate money to a worthwhile community cause. Please register and vote for saving our pools.
The pool idea is called SOS Sink or Swim (or “idea acf2904″). There is more information on the pools when you access that site. The important thing is to register and vote for the idea DAILY until the competition closes.
They are at the semi-finalist stage and the pools need as many votes as possible. The top 25 ideas will then go on to the finals and the judges will make the final decision. The competition closes at 12:00 AM on Dec 17.
