This message is to update you on the situation that occurred in our community yesterday. While we’re relieved this particular incident appears to be unfounded, it is always a good idea to review safety tips with our children.

On Monday, April 26, 2010, at 6:42 p.m., police responded to a suspicious incident in the Yonge Boulevard/Wilson Avenue area.

It was reported that:

  • a nine-year-old girl was playing with a friend in the driveway of a home on Esgore Drive
  • the friend went into the house, and a man appeared in the doorway of the garage
  • the man spoke to the girl, attempted to lure her, and grabbed her by the wrist
  • the girl struck the man’s hand, breaking free and ran into her friend’s home
  • the suspect fled the area on foot

Investigators have determined that the information reported to police is unfounded.

Police Update

by Andrew Howard - Principal Click here to comment »

Toronto Police Logo.jpegLate yesterday, Toronto Police issued an alert about an incident that was reported to have happened in the area of Yonge Boulevard and Wilson Avenue on Monday, April 26 (see attached). While this incident does not involve our school, we encourage anyone who might have information to contact police at the numbers listed on the alert.

As you know, we are fortunate to have a number of safety initiatives at our school and numerous programs and policies that contribute to a safe learning environment. However, most incidents happen away from school. I want to emphasize to all our students, staff, and parents the importance of awareness and the need for extra care in even the most ordinary and everyday routines, no matter where you are.

Our staff regularly speak to students about how to stay safe. I know that you too will want to help ensure our community is as safe as possible. Attached, please find
Streetproofing Tips that you may find helpful when discussing safety with your child.

If you have any questions, please feel free to comment below or to contact the school at 416-395-3090.

Mistaken identity – they showed the wrong Mr. Howard!

by St. Andrews JHS Newsletter Editor Click here to comment »

We thought you’d be interested in this letter from the TDSB Superintendant of Education about an article in the Toronto Star yesterday. Right name, wrong picture!

Today, the Toronto Star reported on an issue at Owen Public School dealing with the school’s financial management. Published with that article was a picture of Andrew Howard who was identified as the Principal at Owen Public School. This is incorrect.

The photo published of Mr. Andrew Howard was done in error by the newspaper. As many of you know, Mr. Howard is an outstanding Principal who has never been the Principal at Owen Public School.

Our Communications and Public Affairs Office has contacted the Toronto Star to ensure this misidentification is retracted and a correction notice is published in tomorrow’s edition of the paper.

Sincerely,

Johanne Messner,
Superintendent of Education
