Thank you!

Traffic Drop offs and Pick ups

When vehicles stop in these areas, they can create an unsafe situation for all. There is a well-marked area for drop offs and pick ups in the parking lot at the back of the school with an entrance at the south end of the school. Thank you!

In an effort to improve the quality of water containers and reduce the consumption of this type of container, the EcoTeam worked hard to promote the sale of Kleen Kanteen bottles which are reusable and made of safer materials. The initiative will start up again in the spring.

Report Cards for 1st Interval

Today, you will have received

  • a copy of your child’s first term report card
  • information and forms regarding parent-teacher interviews
  • an Activity Day package
  • a copy of Noticeboard, our hard copy newsletter which will provide you with updates about our busy and productive fall at St. Andrew’s

Please review the report card with your son/daughter and return the third page of the report card with any comments to your child’s homeroom teacher from December 1st – 3rd if possible. These first term reports provide another opportunity – like Interim Reports and ongoing communication – for parents and guardians to connect with teachers and work together to plan for student success.

Fall and Winter Activities: September to December 2008

busy-bee.jpg

Our staff has been busy offering a full schedule of intramural and extra-curricular activities as well as clubs and special events. Thank you to the many teachers who have gone above and beyond to help plan and execute our many recent and upcoming special events. Take Our Kids to Work Day, Frosh Frolic, the QSP Magazine Fundraiser, our Terry Fox Run, Bark Lake Leadership/Music Development Program, Chapters Night, Spirit Week, Operation Christmas Child, anti-bullying assemblies, St. Andrew’s Day and the CN Tower Climb were some of the many things that have kept us hopping at St. Andrew’s this fall.

Some upcoming events to look forward to before the Winter Break include: Let’s Celebrate Night, HPA Information Evening, York Mills Band visit, the White Ribbon Campaign and the Grade 8 skating trip. We feel very fortunate to have such a strong group of committed, enthusiastic and engaged staff who are working together to provide all of these opportunities for our students, both in the classroom and beyond.

Parent Council Update

St. Andrew’s Chapters Night

images.jpegThis past Monday we held our third annual St. Andrew’s Chapters Fundraising Event. There were lots of St. Andrew’s families in attendance and our prize draw was a popular feature, as usual! We also had the pleasure of listening to St. Andrew’s students play holiday music while we shopped for books and holiday gifts. Thank you to Daphne Strathdee and Grace Lee for organizing this event, as well to all our parent and student volunteers who helped make the evening a big success with their support and enthusiasm.

Due to all of this strong support for our fundraisers from St. Andrew’s parents we will be able to start making some significant contributions to the school for the benefit of our children’s education early in the New Year. Plans are now underway to determine the school’s and students’ highest priorities, with our goal being to spend these fundraising dollars as soon as possible on the students and families who helped generate them. Thank you all!

HALE Committee Newsletter

Our mission is to encourage a lifestyle that promotes healthy minds and bodies in teens.

We are very proud of the fantastic sports program that is being made possible through the commitment and dedication of so many teachers coaching teams, the student Athletic Council who helps run our intramurals, and the school Administration who supports these programs to promote healthy active students.

HALE newsletter logo-1.jpgThe Committee’s efforts are currently focusing on identifying new opportunities to promote good nutrition to our students. The full HALE newsletter was included in Noticeboard, which you received today. Here’s an online version.

Next Parent Council Meeting

Meeting.jpg

Our next Parent Council meeting will be held on Monday, January 19, 2009 from 7-9pm in the school Library. Our guest speaker will be Gerri Gershon, our School Trustee, who always provides interesting and entertaining reports on what is happening with education in our area. We also hope that our new School Superintendent, Johanne Messner, will be able to attend. At this meeting we will also be reviewing our fundraising allocation proposal. This will determine how we spend our fundraising dollars for the students and school. We hope all of you are able to attend.

Ward Forum Meeting

Update from Gerri Gershon, School Trustee

ward-forum.jpg

We had a very informative Ward Forum on Tuesday night. In case you missed it … parents, principals & vice principals heard from our TDSB experts on how we are preparing our students for the 21st century and for careers that don’t even exist yet! FYI…here is a terrific You Tube video called “Did You Know?” It’s about our rapidly changing world that will impact our children’s future – changes in education, changes in career possibilities, changes in technology and more…it’s amazing!

Our TDSB guests gave a fabulous presentation on preparing students for our “new world” by teaching them to “learn how to learn,” also about career pathways, information technology and innovative teacher training for now and the future.

  • In my report I gave an update on the stalled elementary teacher contract negotiations. There is a Nov.30 deadline imposed by the Ministry.
  • Our ECO –schools program has been reassessed and schools will be asked to reach higher levels of accreditation.
  • The Board continues to work to align student enrolment to school space through area reviews. Our Ward is the only one in the TDSB that’s growing! All the rest are experiencing severe decline in enrolment.
  • There is a motion coming to Board to make it easier for schools to adopt a uniform policy. Presently 80% of parents in a particular school must agree to adopt uniforms. The proposal is to change that to 60% of parents in agreement. What do you think?…let me know at: Gerri.Gershon@tdsb.on.ca.
  • Our upcoming proposed ward meetings are Jan. 15, Feb. 23 and May 14 at 7pm…stay tuned for locations…all are welcome.

Guidance Corner

In this edition, I’d like to concentrate on the transition process from grade 8 to grade 9 for students currently registered at St. Andrew’s.

During January and February, grade 8 students returning to St. Andrew’s for grade 9 will complete and submit their course selection sheets for September 2009. To assist you and your child in completing the Course Selection Sheet, there will be an in-school assembly for students where the forms will be distributed and an “After 8” Information Evening for parents on Thursday, December 17th, 2008.

A key part of this course selection process is to ensure that your child will be enrolled in the most appropriate program which meets his/her individual needs. This will greatly increase the opportunity for success for your child in secondary school.

There are situations however, where it will be your responsibility to initiate the required procedures for the transition grade 8 to grade 9. Some of these are as follows:

  • If you want your child to attend a specialized program elsewhere
  • If you want your child to attend a regular program in a school outside of the St. Andrew’s catchment area
  • If you want to enroll your child in a Catholic or private school
  • If you will be moving outside of the TDSB before next September

In the case where you want your child to attend a school other than St. Andrew’s, you will need to complete an Optional Attendance Application (available in the office) and ensure that it reaches the requested secondary school by the deadline of February 1, 2009. (Some specialized schools have earlier deadlines as announced at their Information Evenings.)

There will also be an After 9 Information Evening to assist grade 9 students in choosing the best Secondary placement for grades 10, 11 and 12. This will be held at St. Andrew’s on Wednesday, January 7th, 2009.

Please keep in mind that any application to a secondary school is considered to be a pre-registration and acceptance is contingent upon successful completion of the grade 8 or 9 program. Recommendations at the time of pre-registration reflect a profile of your child’s academic achievement to that date. To maximize success, keep encouraging your son or daughter to work diligently throughout the year – in that way, their best effort will be appropriately communicated to the secondary school.

Please be involved in the transition process. Discuss options and future plans with your child and let him or her know that you are there with help and support in making these most important decisions.

Special School Programs: Grade 8 Information Evenings

Here are the upcoming information sessions for parents and students of grade 8 students interested in programs in other schools:

Please note that we attempt to post here all announcements and information about Grade 8 information sessions that we receive from other schools.

Second HPV Shots

Toronto Public Health staff will visit St. Andrew’s on December 16th to administer the second set HPV vaccinations for grade 8 girls who have already submitted their permission forms.

Student Council: Spirit Week

This year’s Spirit Week took place from November 24th to November 28th. Organized by St. Andrew’s Student Council and their teacher facilitators, Ms. Lee and Ms. Stella, activities during the week included: PJ Day, Crazy Hair Day, Twinning Day, Opposites Day and Blue and White Day. PJ Day was particularly relaxing for students and staff – many of us wore our most colourful pj’s, housecoats and slippers! Crazy Hair and Hat Day was very popular among students. Our week ended with lots of blue and white and our traditional St. Andrew’s Day Assembly.

Go St. Andrew’s!

St. Andrew’s Day: November 30, 2008

scotlandflag.jpgToday, November 28th, we recognized St. Andrew’s Day with two assemblies. Mr. and Mrs. Gifford attended and presented an award in their daughter’s name, Jennifer. Shannon Lee won the award this year. The senior band played magnificently, along with bagpiper, Mr. Millar. Several students spoke about St. Andrew’s history and traditions. Our student team, called Impact, with staff advisors Mrs. Fair and Ms. Lam, described our history of giving, caring and empathy. They described Operation Christmas Child and other initiatives we will participate in this school year. A huge thank you goes to our St. Andrew’s community for their wonderful response to our charitable projects.

Making the Best of Winter Weather at our School

Principals are often asked how we decide whether it is too cold to allow our students out in the schoolyard for recess.

Fresh air and exercise are important for children. It keeps them physically fit, and helps them stay alert all through the school day. Parents can help by making sure their children come to school prepared to spend time outdoors. Hats, mitts, boots and a warm jacket are important to keep students comfortable during lunch and recess.

extreme cold.jpegBut extreme cold can be dangerous, and parents want to know that their children will be safe. When the temperature is predicted to drop below -15C, the City of Toronto may declare a cold weather alert. Schools are very sensitive to the needs of our students and pay close attention to the weather, especially when the windchill is below -20 C.

The TDSB Severe Weather Protocol is flexible, so that every principal can make a decision that meets the needs of his or her school. It sets guidelines for when to allow students outside for recess, when to make out-door breaks shorter, and when to keep students inside altogether.

Canadian winters can be wonderful but when the weather is cold, school staff keep one eye on the thermometer and the other on the needs of our students for a perfect balance of fun and safety.

Upcoming Special Evenings

In light of recent parent feedback, we will make an effort in the future to accommodate a variety of parent and staff schedules when we set evening special events such as information meetings and concerts. We’ll also re-examine our current yearly calendar.

Character Education

Click to EnlargeThis month’s character attribute is empathy. Our students have shown empathy in many ways this year. This week, they embraced empathy in taking on the Operation Christmas Child Challenge. In one week, students and teachers worked hard to fill shoeboxes with a variety of items to make a child’s holiday season a happier one. These boxes will be sent to children in a third world country. Many boxes were filled and will be sent off next week. Thank you to students, parents and staff for their generosity.

Grade 8 Parent Secondary Information Evenings

High school is a big step in a student’s school life. For many elementary school students and their parents, it can seem like a big and scary place. TDSB staff can help ease any anxieties and show all of the exciting possibilities the transition has to offer. In high school, students have the opportunity to explore a variety of different programs and courses, participate in a wide-range of extracurricular activities, develop life-long friendships, and prepare for post-secondary life.

From November through to January, TDSB secondary schools across the city are hosting parent information evenings to help grade 8 students and parents make informed decisions about high school. Discover a wealth of information about our secondary schools, including programs, special characteristics, and diploma requirements. To find out when your neighbourhood school is offering an information night, visit www.tdsb.on.ca where you can also view a short movie about some of the great program opportunities available in TDSB secondary schools.

Please click here for more information about the Grade 8 Information Night at Sir Wilfrid Laurier C.I.

Remembrance Day

November 11 was Remembrance Day. On Tuesday, November 11, 2008, students and staff at our school and across the city marked the day with classroom activities and school assemblies. During Remembrance Day, our teachers made connections between global events and students’ lives by promoting peace within our school community. On this solemn occasion, our staff, students, parents, and the wider community all joined together in a call for peace.

In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

The All City groups will perform at the 123rd Annual Spring Festival Concert on Thursday, May 7th at 7:30 pm at Massey Hall. Students who successfully complete the audition process will have eight rehearsals in preparation for this concert.

The conductors for this year’s All City groups are as follows:

  • Band – Gino Falconi
  • Strings – Catherine West
  • Orchestra – Terry Madill

The All City groups are a wonderful tradition within our board. Thank-you so much for sharing this information with all grade 6, 7 and 8 instrumental students and their families in our system.

Bark Lake Leadership/Music Program Field Trip

report from Hugh Corbett

From October 29th to 31st, fifty-one grade 8 band students and four teachers traveled over 2 hours to the Bark Lake Leadership Centre just south of Haliburton to participate in music rehearsals, to improve self confidence, to develop new friendships and deepen old ones. I was a little worried when I had to brush off an inch or more of snow from my car that morning. I was imagining a blanket of snow across the hills and valleys of Northern Ontario; but, instead we were greeted by sunny skies, cool breezes and the warm and inviting Bark Lake staff.

The first day we got some exercise by playing “Stones” and going on a Night Hike. The stars that evening were absolutely breathtaking. As well, the students participated in a hour long rehearsal in which they focussed on listening to their own sound, the instruments next to them, the instruments in their section and finally to all the sections in the band. We were all impressed with how much better the band sounded because of this “Level 4 Listening”! After dinner we all walked past the marsh and enjoyed watching a beaver swim within 50 feet of us.

The weather of the second day was warmer than the first but the marsh had frozen over and some students enjoyed the sounds of stones being thrown into the icy water as we walked to breakfast. No meal was ever a disappointment at Bark Lake!

The second day brought some of our challenge activities. Half of the students made their way to the High Ropes Course. Picture about 8 hydro poles in a open field protected by Maple trees of gold, yellow and orange foliage. Each student was harnessed and helmeted and instructed on what their roles were to be during the activity.

Then the climbing began! Some climbed straight up to the top and leapt off into the air only to be brought down to Earth ever so gently by the Bark Lake staff and students who were “belaying”. Others chose to meet each other 30 feet in the air and have a duel with Nerf swords while others thought it would be more fun to climb up 30 feet and crawl, upside down, across a 25 feet of rope from one pole to another.

Some students managed to climb half way up the hydro pole and were “belayed” back down. They were quite satisfied that they had mastered their fear of heights at least for a few minutes. The other students were climbing the walls in a rock climbing room and playing soccer while moving across the room by bouncing on a ball. Later they tried to hit one of three targets on the archery course! Unfortunately, it was to cold to canoe across the Bark Lake.

That afternoon, the students participated in a music workshop with a professional musician. The pros were there to help the students play even better than they already do. In fact, I received a few compliments from the musicians about how well they played and how good their behaviour and attention was. Then all the students came back together and enjoyed being conducted by three of the professional musicians. They all had their own unique style, but, I think the kids liked Rick the best; he was too funny!

Later that evening, we sat around the campfire and enjoyed singing some familiar tunes and told some interesting stories. Mr. Johnson’s was the best. Late at night when the lights are off, you should ask one of the Bark Lake students, “Has anyone seen my dog?”

The last day was the same as the first except the students switched activities. We said our goodbyes, sadly loaded and boarded the coach and were on our way back to St. Andrew’s JHS. We all had a great time and wished we could have stayed longer.

I would also like to thank the rest of the team, Mme. Baltayan, Mrs. Lau and Mr. Johnson. We all had our roles in making this trip the success and I am very grateful of the time you have dedicated to the trip. As well, thank you to Mr. Wilkinson and Mrs. Dubeau for their guidance. What an outstanding trip! It truly was an 11/10 in every way.

A second trip, for string students, is being planned. Details about this will be announced at a later date.

School Dance: Friday, October 31, 2008

Thank you to all staff and students who participated in the first school dance of the year! Many costumes were worn and the students who attended the dance all enjoyed themselves tremendously. At several points during the dance, we saw when we peered into the cafeteria, a mass of hands in the air and a chorus of sing-alongs was heard. I think that meant A WHOLE LOTTA FUN was going on in there! What a way to end the week!

The Annual Report on Ontario’s Public Schools

Did you know that:

  • 44% of elementary schools have a physical education teacher, a steady improvement over the past three years
  • only 60% of elementary schools have a teacher-librarian, compared to 80% in 1997/98?

This and more information is available in The Annual Report on Ontario’s Public Schools.

Each year People for Education publishes a report on Ontario’s public schools. To keep track of programs and resources in Ontario schools, People for Education sends surveys to school councils and principals in Ontario’s English, French and Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the province. The highlights of this data from these surveys and from the Ministry of Education, Statistics Canada, the Canadian Council on Learning and the OECD can be found in the attached Annual Report on Ontario’s Public Schools.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up…

images-2.jpegKeep the Traffic Flowing!

To ensure our student safety and to make drop offs and pick ups as smooth as possible, please follow these guidelines:

  1. Wherever and whenever possible, encourage students to walk to school. When walking is not possible, encourage TTC use, or set up meeting spots for student pick ups about a block away from the school so that students are getting some exercise and congestion is eased somewhat.
  2. When dropping off or picking up students, use the traffic loop in the parking lot. Cars should pick up students on the NORTH side of the lot.
  3. This year, one of our students will travel by school bus which will need to use the traffic loop in bad weather. Please do not park by the hash marks in the loop, particularly close to the fence.
  4. Do not stop
    • in the driveway
    • at the top of the loop by the school
    • on the road.

Stopping in these locations makes it difficult to see and therefore dangerous for our community. It also impedes traffic flow.

Working Together for our Students’ Success

Volunteering at school or joining the School Council are great ways for parents to stay connected with all the exciting things going on here in our school community.

Every school council is made up of parents, members of the community and school administration to represent the interests of parents and students. School councils also get support from the school board in developing their school community leadership skills.

Another opportunity for parents to participate is through local ward forums. At the TDSB, 22 publicly-elected trustees each represent a geographic area called a ward.

Trustees call public meetings called ward forums, where parents from area schools meet to discuss issues of common concern and provide input into school board decisions that affect not only their own school but the whole school system.

The TDSB has also established a number of Community Advisory Committees, comprised of parents, TDSB staff and elected trustees, to provide ongoing community advice and input on specific areas of policy or programming.

To find out more about how you can get involved, talk to your principal, visit www.tdsb.on.ca/parents, or call (416) 397-3528.

Scented Product Awareness Program

Scented products have an impact on everyone. For most people, perfumed, scented or fragrant products are enjoyed, but for those who have asthma, allergies or environmental sensitivities, exposure can result in illness, absence from work and even hospitalization.

“We want the Toronto District School Board to be a clean and safe environment for all of out staff, students and visitors”, says Chris Broadbent, Manager of Occupational Health and Safety at the TDSB. To help achieve that, we are launching a Scented Products Awareness Program encouraging the TDSB community to reduce the use of fragrances and scented products.

Using fragrances is a personal choice. However, by their very nature, they are shared, says Broadbent. The chemicals vaporize into the air and are easily inhaled by those around us. Today’s scented products are made up of a complex mixture of chemicals which can contribute to indoor air quality problems and cause health problems.

This awareness program will do just that: “increase the awareness within our community about the impact of fragrance on health, wellbeing and productivity of those impacted by scents.”

It also provides proper steps to respond to scent-related issues, he says. If you experience a scent-related problem, please contact your supervisor to discuss options.

For more information and a list of fragrance-free and unscented products, please visit www.tdsb.on.ca

What can you do to help?
  • Be considerate of those who are sensitive to fragrance chemicals.
  • Avoid using scented products and use scent-free alternatives, instead.
  • If you do use scented products, use them sparingly. A general guideline for scented products is that the scent should not be detectable more than an arm’s length away from you.
  • Do not apply scented products in a public area.
  • Avoid using laundry products or cleaning agents that are scented.
  • Air out dry-cleaned clothing before wearing.
