I think the cafeteria food is pretty bad. My child never purchases her lunch there. Always brings it. I think it is high time that things change in all cafeterias in the schools.

While milk is readily available and affordable, there seems to be a lack of complex carbs and lean proteins. Multigrain breads with lean meats, cheeses and vegetarian options are preferable to fries and cookies please. My kids buy milk everyday, and bring their own healthy lunch.

For a school that teaches nutrition in health and has a Healthy Living Program you are sending mixed messages to our children with the same old unhealthy junk food.It is hard for parents to convince their kids what is right when their school is sending mixed messages. As parents we need the support of the school with consistency of talk and action! I agree with Shelley, more complex carbs and lean proteins and save the cookies for the occassional fun bake sale.

Debbie and Shelley have made excellent points and I agree 100% with them. We teach our children about proper nutrition at home and in school, so why isn’t it reinforced in the cafeteria? Proper nutrition makes for children who are energetic, able to focus and ready to learn. This is why my child never buys her lunch in the cafeteria, but brings a healthy one from home!

Has anyone ever seen the program “Jamie Oliver’s School Dinners” on Foodtv? He has advocated for nutritious lunches to be served in school cafeterias in England instead of unhealthy convenience food. When kids were eating the junk, they were cranky, their energy was low and some were down right disruptive in class. When they ate properly, these problems cleared up and the children were more productive. We should take the lessons learned from this program and apply them to our school and all schools in the TDSB.

I haven’t seen the food myself but my daughter refuses to buy anything from the cafeteria. She brings a nutritious and delicious lunch from home.

I personally think that the cafeteria food is overpriced and unhealthy. One doller for a cookie, that is a total rip off. I think that someone should talk to the cafeteria owners and work something out because our children are wasting their allowences on disgusting food. My child is always hungry when she comes home on days when she buys a lunch and has no money leftover. She spent a whole five dollers on food that makes her hungry and grumpy! Something should be done.

I think that the food is very underaverage. I give my child a doller a day to buy a carton of milk and usually, there are none available. Sometimes, there is not enough food and she tells me that the mean cafeteria lady shoos everyone away and leaves them hungry!
VERY VERY VERY DISSATISFYING!!!
The school should change the cafeteria ladies to some who actually care about our childrens health. They could at least whip up some french fries to keep then satisfied until after school!

I haven’t a clue what is available in the cafeteria. I have never been there when it is open. I don’t get very far when I ask. It doesn’t seem to be clear what to expect but I don’t think this is of that much interest.
When my kids were in elementary school in the States with a full cafeteria they had “bring your parent to lunch” day a couple of times a year and then I experienced first hand what they had and it was really good. School lunch menus were published the week before in the local newspaper. You knew what days to send a bag lunch.
When we are rushed I send $5.00 for lunch and he seems to be satisfied. It is good to know it is there as a fall back but we pack lunch most days. I I knew there were good choices that he would actually take and how much they are, I would probably have him buy lunch a little more.

Well, the foods are okay for my child, but the servings are too small. They need more helpers because it takes too much time in line to get even one item. Also, the food is overpriced.

I wish I could see the menus. I have only heard from him that he doesn’t like the food but I don’t get much else. As a result, I send food from home. I would buy him a lunch more often if I trusted he wouldn’t be able to buy french fries instead of something healthy.

Actually I don’t think there’s much of a menu, and little in the way of specials … was much better at the beginning of last year. Now its just fries, hashbrowns, icky pizza, awful hamburgers, lots of junk food; and a few meagre portions of something “theoretically” healthy … if they haven’t run out. Quality’s not great, and service is slow (and loud). Could be a LOT better.

My boy hates me if I am in rush and asked him to buy food from the cafeteria. I have no idea of the menu but he told me there is not much choices, it took him too long for the line up and whatever he wants is always not available. He only tried the fries and cookies. To me this is not a lunch. Will there be any improvement after our messages?

I think that the cafeteria food is pretty good such as the patty’s and cookies but I think that the cafeteria menu needs to be reviewed.

One idea is that you could take another poll. This time the poll could focus on a range of healthy foods from salads to fruit to healthy sandwiches, and then we could vote on what foods should be added to the cafeteria offerings.

There is a wide variety of cafeteria food, but it lacks flavour. Any hot meals (pizza, chicken, etc.) are usually over-salted, and the serving sizes are either very large or very small. I have heard stories of metallic stains being found on the surfaces of hot food due to tinfoil. As well, the healthy items provided by the cafeteria are stored somewhat conspicuously, often prompting students to select less healthy foods. In my opinion, the cafeteria could definitely use some improvement.

The cafe prices are way too high and nothing is healthy. The frozen veggies and frozen pasta were a nice try. Only thing that tastes good is fries.
